8-Week Foundational Course in Acrylic Painting (Beginner to Intermediate), Led by Luke Deacon

Week 1: Introduction to Acrylics & Materials

  • Understanding acrylic paints, brushes, and surfaces

  • Basic color mixing and brush techniques

  • Creating texture and experimenting with different tools

Week 2: Color Theory & Mixing

  • Primary, secondary, and complementary colors

  • Understanding warm vs. cool tones

  • Mixing neutrals and achieving color harmony

Week 3: Composition & Underpainting

  • Planning a painting with effective composition

  • Sketching and blocking in shapes

  • Using underpainting to establish values and depth

Week 4: Light, Shadow & Depth

  • Understanding tonal values and contrast

  • Creating depth through shading and layering

  • Using glazing techniques for subtle color shifts

Week 5: Blending & Brushwork Techniques

  • Wet-on-wet vs. dry brush techniques

  • Creating smooth transitions and textures

  • Exploring palette knife techniques for bold effects

Week 6: Exploring Style & Subject Matter

  • Still life, landscape, and abstract approaches

  • Developing a personal style

  • Working from reference images or imagination

Week 7: Refining Details & Layering

  • Adding depth with multiple layers

  • Enhancing details with highlights and shadows

  • Exploring mixed media elements for creative expression

Week 8: Final Project & Review

  • Creating a finished acrylic painting

  • Personalized feedback and refining techniques

  • Group critique and discussion

This course builds confidence in acrylic painting while encouraging personal exploration.

Tea master Kelly will supply of organic herbal teas to sooth ourselves into our painting.

Suitable for mature teens to Adults at all stages.

About Luke Deacon

Luke Deacon is a licensed art teacher and accomplished artist with over 20 years of international teaching experience. Based in the Noosa Hinterland, his work is deeply inspired by the coastal landscape. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Deakin University and a Bachelor of Teaching, having studied under renowned Abstract Expressionist Bruce Vinall. Awarded a scholarship to study Asian Art in Japan, he explored Zen painting, ceramics, Japanese calligraphy, and art history. His teaching blends traditional techniques with expressive, contemporary approaches, fostering creativity, confidence, and artistic growth. Luke’s courses provide expert guidance for all skill levels in a supportive, inspiring environment.
